Not entirely scratch built, but close enough to it, my side vents started life as the cut outs from the skins where the side vents belong. It made sense to me to use these parts because the size and radius was a perfect fit and the metal was the right colour.
I started by printing out a template of the side vents and stuck this to the top surface of the curve. What came next was a dazzling display in the ways of the dremel, blended beautifully with the seemingly lost arts of hand filing and patience.
Next, I cut out strips of HIPS to create the recesses. This took time due to the concave surface they were mounting too. It meant that each edge that met the curved metal had to be slightly chamfered to keep them parallel and perpendicular to the other pieces that made up the recess. The HIPS pieces were stuck to the metal with MEK which melted the plastic onto the metal.
With all that done, the parts just needed a few coats of paint. I masked up the entire panel and cut out the holes with a scalpel to cover the metal. I then just sprayed some primer in and then went over that with the layers of cobalt blue and anodized blue. The masking tape was then removed and the panels were given a gentle polish. Job done.
